Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: April 2, 2022

Dedicated to the brilliant and beautiful Ernie Tripper

Yes, SNL is back tonight, it’s live tonight and the host is comedian Jerrod Carmichael.  This is Carmichael’s first time hosting the show, and his first time appearing on Saturday Night Live, and its going to be a big exciting night.  Why? For starters, SNL has been off a few weeks and there’s a lot to cover.  More importantly, everyone is waiting to see how Saturday Night will react to The Slap.  That’s why America’s excited. But we’re excited because Jerrod is hilarious and fascinating and he just came out to the world in his new special, so there will be plenty to talk about.  If you think “coming out” isn’t as big a deal as it used to be you’re right, but black entertainers announcing their LGBTQ status is not as common as you might think, so to the millions of young black non-cis kids out there, its still a big deal to see a role model showing pride.

Carmichael is promoting his new HBO special, “Rothanial” which premiered last night (Friday). Taped at New York City’s infamous Blue Note Jazz Club, Rothanial is an emotional ride covering in depth how Carmichael dealt with keeping his sexuality a secret, and how that has affected his relationships with family and friends. “I rebelled against it my whole life. I thought I’d never, ever come out. At many points I thought I’d rather die than confront the truth of that, to actually say it to people. Because I know it changes some people’s perceptions of me. I can’t control that,” he says in the special.  Tonight he will take the stage at 30 Rock to love an acceptance. Before Rothanial, you know Jerrod from his two prior HBO specials, Love at the Store, directed by Spike Lee  in 2014, and 8 directed by Bo Burnham in 2017, as well as his NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show, He also executive produced Rel for Fox.

Will Pete Davidson return? Will the Oscars incident be the cold open?  Will there be more tributes to Ukraine?  Will Weekend Update address Bruce Willis’ illness and retirement? Was there any other news that anyone heard about besides those three things this week?

Musical guest Gunna joins Carmichael and Heidi Garner for the very short promo, which jokes about well…come on, its obviously Gunna. Heidi wants everyone to promise that they’re “gunna” bring their A game. Jerrod Gunna, Heidi Gunna and yeah, Gunna gunna. And we already know Chris Rock is gunna…but not on SNL, he’ll be in Atlantic City performing at the Borgata.

Watch tonight at 11:30pm ET on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
