Showtime just released the series premiere of its new dark comedy Kidding early, and its too early to tell if this is the next great classic Carrey role or not, but you definitely should watch the first few episodes before you make up your mind. Part Johnny Depp era-Willy Wonka, part Fred Rogers, Carrey’s character Jeff Pickles is a children’s entertainer whose reach is considerable- his gentle wisdom has helped to raise multiple generations across all races, economic classes, and religions and they all love him pretty unconditionally. But his own life is in turmoil, dealing with devastating loss, navigating a divorce he doesn’t want, and fighting battles with the Network about where to steer his show. All the while those around him deal with the consequences of the mental unraveling of Mr. Pickles.
Its Carrey’s first return to a starring series role in over twenty years and it’s unpredictable and entertaining. The series reunites Carrey with Oscar® winner Michel Gondry. The premiere episode is available for free now on YouTube, Facebook and SHO.com. The 10-episode season of KIDDING will premiere on Sunday, September 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT after SHAMELESS.
Frank Langella, Judy Greer, and Catherine Keener costar along with Cole Allen and Juliet Morris.
