As part of their kickoff of a new mental health awareness initiative, HBO is making Gary Gulman’s groundbreaking new HBO comedy special available for free for a limited time to anyone who can access the internet.
Gary Gulman: The Great Depresh is a 70 minute blend of stand up comedy and a documentary short. Both components detail Gulman’s lifelong struggle with depression that culminated in a crippling bout that led him to hit the breaks on a career that was blowing up. He had to stop performing and move back into his childhood home, and underwent radical treatment procedures.
In the hour, Gulman speaking about mental health issues in a way that is both entertaining and poignant and since its debut has stirred up extensive discussion on Twitter with many thanking Gulman for his candor. By talking about his mental health struggles, he hopes to help others feel more comfortable, less afraid and most importantly, less alone.
Gulman also offers his hilarious observations on a number of other topics, including: his admiration for Millennial attitudes toward bullying, masculinity and sports; his love for basketball and why he tried to avoid playing football in high school; menacing TV news theme songs; and how his mother’s voice is always in his head.
