Top Ten Comedy Movies of 2025!

Ten Best Comedy Movies of 2024!

This is the 12th year for the Interrobang Readers’ Choice Comedy Awards, and as usual, we’ve teamed up with The Bennington Show to narrow down the chaotic year that was 2025 into something resembling a Top 10.

Let’s be honest: 2025 wasn’t exactly a “Golden Age” for the silver screen. We live in a time where comedy is fighting for air between massive franchises and 15-second TikTok sketches. Finding ten “perfect” comedies in a single year is a tall order—hell, some years we’re lucky if we get three. But despite the uphill battle for the genre, we found ten films that managed to actually make us laugh, or at least reminded us why we still go to the theater (or open the app).

From long-awaited sequels like Happy Gilmore 2 and Spinal Tap II to the absurdist swings of Mountainhead and Friendship, the variety is there even if the quantity isn’t what it used to be.

But here’s the thing: We only pick the nominees. The final call belongs to you. This remains the only place in the comedy world where the fans—the people actually buying the tickets and watching the specials—decide who takes home the title of the Best Comedy Movie of the Year.

But first, here’s a look at our past winners.

In 2014, Wes Anderson’s gorgeous Grand Budapest Hotel took the honors in this category. In 2015, it was Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck that got your vote. In 2016, Deadpool was your favorite movie. And in 2017 you loved Gilbert: A Gilbert Gottfried Story as much as we did. In 2018, the best comedy movie of the year came from the Coen Brothers with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In 2019 you picked Dolemite Is My Name as your comedy movie of the year, in 2020, the #1 comedy movie award went to Borat, in 2021, you picked Coming 2 America  as your favorite,  in 2022 Joe List’s feature film debut Fourth of July won the vote and in 2023 you chose Tapawingo as your favorite comedy of the year. Last year, the winner was Stavros Halkias turn in Lets Start a Cult.

Now it’s your turn to read the nominees for the #1 comedy movie of 2024. Scroll down to read our top 10 picks, and if and then vote! You can vote every day, we don’t care! It just is more love for these wonderful films. But then after you vote, check out our list for some great movies to see, that maybe you haven’t checked out yet.

Soon you’ll also be able to vote for Comedy Special of the Year and Comedian of the Year!

Comedy Album of the Year!

Director: Akiva Schaffer
Written By: Akiva Schaffer, Dan Gregor, Doug Mand
Cast: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson
GENRE: Action Comedy, Parody
Release: In Theaters

THE NAKED GUN. The fourth film in the Naked Gun Franchise stars Neeson as the son of Lt. Frank Drebin as he tries to follow in his fathers footsteps to prevent the closure of Police Squad. Neeson taking over for Nielsen sounded odd on paper, but in a year of “serious” movies, we needed a film that wasn’t afraid to be completely stupid. It’s a barrage of sight gags and puns that doesn’t fully live up to the original but it proves the “Police Squad” spirit can survive a reboot, even if the world it’s parodying has gotten weirder than the movie itself.

THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME. Wes Anderson goes full espionage black comedy. Benicio del Toro stars as a ruthless billionaire arms dealer trying to bond with his estranged daughter (who happens to be a nun). It’s meticulous, it’s dry, and it’s the most “art-house” laugh on this list, proving that even in a down year for comedy, Wes is still playing in a league of his own. And there can be no question that this is del Toro’s year, crushing it in movies by both Wes and PT Anderson.

ELLA MCKAY.   James L. Brooks returns with a political comedy that actually has a soul. Emma Mackey plays an idealistic young politician thrust into the Governor’s office while her personal life (and her serial-adulterer father) falls apart around her. It’s a throwback to the “smart comedy” era—fast dialogue, messy people, and actual stakes.

Director: Andrew DeYoung
Written by: Andrew DeYoung
Cast: Tim Robinson, Kate Mara, Paul Rudd, Jack Dylan Grazer

GENRE: Black Comedy
Release: In Theaters

FRIENDSHIP. Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd gave us the most uncomfortably hilarious movie of the year. Robinson plays a suburban dad who becomes obsessively, destructively fixated on his cool new neighbor (Rudd). It captures the absolute horror of adult male friendships and “trying too hard” in a way that will make you laugh and want to hide under your seat at the same time.

SPINAL TAP 2: THE END CONTINUES. Forty years later, the amps still go to eleven. Rob Reiner reunited the world’s loudest band for a “contractually obligated” reunion. Watching Nigel, David, and Derek navigate the world of podcasts and “ghost tourism” in New Orleans is true character comedy. It’s a bit of a “fan-service” victory lap, but when the fans have waited four decades, nobody is complaining. Marty Di Bergi returns to document the band’s awkward reunion which pulls David St Hubbins away from creating hold music for podcasts, Derek Smalls curating a New Museum of Glue and Nigel running a cheese and guitar shop.

Director: Bradley Cooper
Written by: Bradley Cooper
Cast: Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Bradley Cooper
GENRE: Romantic comedy drama
Release: In Theaters

IS THIS THING ON?  Bradley Cooper directs Will Arnett in this dark look at a man who copes with a brutal divorce by impulsively trying stand-up comedy. It’s a “divorce movie” that hits all the painful notes but finds the absurdity in the New York open-mic scene. Arnett is perfect as a guy who is failing at life but finding his voice one terrible set at a time. If for no other reason, come for the Comedy Cellar stand up cameos.  Worth the price of admission right there. And if you live in NY pick up a Cooper cheesesteak on the way. Go Birds.
Only in Theaters.

Director: Jesse Armstrong
Written by: Drew Pearce
Cast:Steve Carrell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef
GENRE: Action Comedy
Release: In Theaters

MOUNTAINHEAD.  Director Jesse Armstrong (of Succession fame) takes four tech billionaires to a secluded retreat while the world falls apart due to AI chaos. It’s a biting, cynical satire that treats the “masters of the universe” like the petulant, unremarkable children they are. It’s the “stink-eye” comedy we deserved in 2025.
Watch it on Peacock or rent it on VOD

Director: Tom Gormican
Written by: Tom Gormican, Kevin Etten
Cast: Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton
GENRE: Action Comedy,
Release: In Theaters

ANACONDA. This isn’t a remake—it’s a meta-comedy about two guys (Jack Black and Paul Rudd) having a midlife crisis who decide to remake their favorite movie, Anaconda, in the actual Amazon. When a real giant snake shows up, the “movie-making” comedy turns into a survival nightmare. It’s Jack Black at his most manic, which is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Watch on In Theaters, Christmas Day

Director: Steve Chbosky
Written By: Liz Maccie
Cast: Vince Vaughn, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, Linda, Cardellini, Susan Sarandon
GENRE: Biographical Comedy
Release: Netflix

NONNAS.  Vince Vaughn stars in this “dramedy” inspired by a true story about a man who opens a restaurant staffed entirely by Italian grandmothers. While it leans into the “heartfelt” side of things, the bickering between the nonnas (played by legends like Susan Sarandon and Lorraine Bracco) provides the kind of organic, character-driven comedy that feels increasingly rare.
