Tony Deyo Recorded an Album Without Telling the Crowd Who the Headliner Was

Family-friendly comedian Tony Deyo will release his third stand-up comedy album Secret Headliner on Tuesday, December 10th. Unlike your typical comedy show, this audience did not know who they would be seeing until Deyo stepped on stage.

“The true test of a joke,” Deyo said of the experimental album, “is will it make strangers laugh? Does it work when no one has any idea who you are?” The Virginia native knows that a room full of fans will guarantee a great set. By keeping the album recording a secret to his followers, Deyo put his latest material to the purest test.

In Secret Headliner, Deyo relays the quirks and idiosyncrasies of family life and raising his son in New York City, proving that a good father should be willing to ruin everyone else’s day just to make his kid happy.

Deyo is an accomplished stand-up who the Village Voice once called “one of the tightest joke writers in the business.” The clean comic has appeared on Conan, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live, and Comics Unleased with Byron Allen. His previous album, Comedy Road Trip, debuted at #1 on iTunes in 2016 and landed on Billboard’s comedy charts. Deyo can be heard regularly on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Secret Headliner was recorded on a random Wednesday night at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh, North Carolina under the mysterious title of Stand-Up Confidential. “The audience had no idea who the comedian would be until the host introduced me. And, quite frankly, they had no idea who I was after the host introduced me,” Deyo recalls. “But that’s how I wanted it.”

Even if he had to break it to them that they would not be seeing Chris Rock.

Secret Headliner will be available for purchase on iTunes and on Tuesday, December 10th. The album will also be available to stream on Spotify and Pandora.
