Tig Notaro Kicks Off Boyish Girl Interrupted Tour

Tig-Notaro-Interview

Tig Notaro has a lot going on, not the least of which is her Boyish Girl Interrupted Tour that kicks off next week. Tig is going to be hitting up 32 cities in North America, and then another four cities in Australia. One of those dates– at Largo Theater in Los Angeles will be in honor of breast cancer awareness month, on October 13th, and its going to be a really special night, full of surprises. You can get tickets to the Largo show here.  We got to interview Tig just before she heads out on tour.

The IBang: Your project with Showtime, Knock Knock It’s Tig Notaro is such a brilliant and funny idea. How was the experience of creating that? And when will we be seeing it?
Tig Notaro: There is not a definitive air date at the moment, but I think early next year is pretty likely. The experience of shooting this was great. It is an idea I had for a while, and even did this on the road quite a bit in previous years. It just was never something that was financed by a network to air, and being that these shows I previously did were so fun, I thought this could be a great idea as a television project for a network. And fortunately Showtime got the idea right away and were generous enough to pay for it.

The IBang: What kinds of things are you talking about on your new tour?
Tig Notaro: The topics vary – I touch on everything from the week of bombing at a comedy club in Vegas, to stories about me and my friend searching for Santa Claus to more personal events.

The IBang: Podcasting is just so massive these days. What made you want to start podcasting? Is it just a great promotional tool? Or does it offer an artistic outlet and a voice that stand up doesn’t fulfill?
Tig Notaro: The promotional tool component was something I was very conscious of. But then once we started doing the podcast, the focus shifted from the promotional tool side of it and it quickly became so much fun – who would not want to get together with their friends once a week and just chat and joke around. And during the tough personal stretch I went through, the podcast further evolved into an outlet where I could discuss all that I had been going through. And the support I would receive through the podcast was truly inspiring and astounding.

The IBang: Although women are still enormously underrepresented in comedy, it feels like that wall is finally starting to give way with more great women getting noticed every year. What do you think has to happen in comedy to help things change even more and bring more women to the forefront of comedy?
Tig Notaro: I am certainly all for women having more opportunities and having their voices be heard. But for me whenever this topic comes up, which it does and has quite frequently in the media, I think about my experience and realize how fortunate I have been to always have been treated so well for the most part. I never felt like an outsider in some boys club where there were an unfair set of rules and standards applied to me because I am a female. But certainly understand that my experience might be quite different, which is why when I have felt supported by my peers, it is something I always felt lucky about.

The IBang: You seem incredibly confident on stage and in front of audiences. Where does your confidence come from?
Tig Notaro: Years of consistently getting on stage working on new material, bombing, growing- all of those things.

The IBang: Is there something in comedy that you haven’t done yet but you’re aching to do?
Tig Notaro: Wear a wacky wig.

Tig Notaro goes on tour starting this Tuesday, September 23.  Scroll down for tour dates and ticket information.
