Jacqueline Novak, John Early, New York City, Natasha Lyonne, Cherry Lane Theater, Mike Birbiglia, Blowjobs. What more could you need to convince you that a project is worthy of your attention? Everyone who has seen this show is raving.
Novak is about to star in her first off Broadway one woman show at the Cherry Lane Theater. Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees is a new comedy written by and starring Novak, described as the most high-brow show about blowjobs you’ll ever see. Novak spins her material on the femininity of the penis and the stoicism of the vulva into an unexpectedly philosophical show that’s part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of triumph.
Jacqueline has been working on this show for the last few years, everywhere from comedy clubs and backyard parties in Brooklyn to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and most recently in black box theaters in Los Angeles. “It’s thrilling to bring it to New York City, the town where I developed as comedian,” Novak said, “not to mention at one of its most beautiful theaters – the Cherry Lane.”
The new show is being presented by Lyonne, directed by Early, and EP’ed by Mike Birbiglia. Early calls novak his favorite stand-up comedian, and says she is a “shocking ray of intellectualism, craft, and pot-belly laughs” in a “comedy hellscape” that is “oversaturated with lazy irony and didacticism.” If that’s not endorsement enough, Lyonne says Jacqueline’s “linguistic gymnastics took my brain topsy turvy while doubling me over with laughter.” Birbiglia says her hour is his #1 recommendation in comedy, and calls her the future of comedy. Also adding raves- Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, John Mulaney, Ira Glass, Anthony Jeselnik, and Miranda July who called the show “staggering:the kind of thing that changed everyone in the room.”
