The Far Side is Coming Back to Life

We live in the era of the reboot and they’ve ranged the gamut from thank-you-entertainment-gods to who cares. But the latest re-animation announcement has excited a lot of people. The Far Side is coming back to life! In some form!

If you’re under 25, you probably weren’t even alive the last time a new The Far Side comic strip edition was released. There have been books and calendars and collections and framed prints to help familiarize you with Gary Larson’s iconic creation, but no new work since he retired his work from publication on January 1, 1995.

And then this weekend, someone noticed that the official website of The Far Side was updated with an exciting message portending that the greatness of The Far Side is being re-invigorated. “Uncommon, unreal, and (soon-to-be) unfrozen. A new online era of The Far Side coming soon,” the site reads along with an illustration of a flame-thrower operator thawing out an iceberg full of Far-Side drawings.

Now that doesn’t mean that we’re getting brand new cartoons– an archival collection could be under construction, or just digital availability. Any digitization is a big leap for Far Side fans, since Gary famously has done his best to keep his work (his children) off the net. There hasn’t been any information beyond the fact that something digital this way comes. We’ll be looking for updates.

Until then….
