The Big Sick’s Big Trailer is Finally Here
We’ve been hearing about The Big Sick for months and finally those of us who didn’t see the film screened at Sundance can get our first look at the trailer.
The Big Sick has all the earmarks of being one of the best and most talked about romantic comedies released this summer. Husband and wife writing team Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s autobiographical comedy grabbed a gigantic deal at Sundance this year. The film sold for $12M to Amazon Studios and Amazon, by the way, grabbed Manchester by the Sea the prior year, and we all know how that worked out.
The movie is based on the real-life courtship between Nanjiani and Gordon, and tells the story of a Pakistan-born aspiring comedian who connects with a grad student after one of his stand up sets. What they thought would be just a one-night stand becomes something more, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry, who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
Comedy star maker Judd Apatow produced the film. Michael Showalter directed, and the cast is a dream cast starring Kumail as himself, Zoe Kazan as Emily, and Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as her parents. The reviews from Sundance were outstanding and we hear Holly Hunter and Ray Romano are tremendous in the film. As far as Kumail’s resume goes, he’s beloved for his character Dinesh on HBO’s Silicon Valley, he produced (and starred in) a hit live stand up show The Meltdown along with Gordon (The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail became a popular Comedy Central series), and in addition to plenty of other television and film credits, he also hosts two hit podcasts.
The trailer hints at a heartfelt comedic love story, full of fantastic performances.
Amazon Studios & Lionsgate will release The Big Sick in select theaters on June 23 followed by a national rollout July 14
