This Week on the 5: Sometimes The Writers Know Better Than You
People want to see their favorite characters on their favorite TV shows hook up, it’s as old as television. What drives people truly nuts is when writers don’t give the viewer what they want. They don’t give them the satisfaction of two popular characters finally cosummating their sometimes years long relationships. Usually writers know what they’re doing, some characters just should never be together because once that happens, the viewer’s gotten what they want and they become bored. Below are five relationships that could of gone the way of Sam and Diane, but didn’t, and that’s for the best.

- Tony Soprano and Dr. Melfi. Through six seasons of the Sopranos Tony banged everything in site. Except one woman, his therapist Dr. Melfi. Everyone watching the show figured it would happen yet it never did. There was sexual tension but never any action. Would we of all loved to have seen Tony take Dr. Melfi right in her office? Yeah, but it would have blown the one semi-healthy female relationship Tony had. It’s for the better though, Tony ended up dead and Dr. Melfi ended up a rape victim, these two kids would have never made it last.
- George Michael and Maeby. Who wouldn’t of like to have seen some Bluth family incest? Except we learn later that it wouldn’t of been incest at all. Cousins by family but not by blood, George Michael Bluth had a seemingly unhealthy crush on his cousin Maeby through every season of Arrested Development and even got to kiss her at one point. He didn’t get much farther than that. Seeing them as a couple would have been incredibly satisfying but we all know we’re better off seeing George Michael creepily pine for her. Though we don’t know if they hooked up between the last season and the new episodes about to air on Netflix. Here’s hoping! (or not)
- Louie and Pamela. It feels like Louie CK and Pamela Adlon should be together, he makes her laugh and she’s ridiculously cool – plus she helped him try and find a new apartment. But do we really want to see Louie happy and in a relationship? The only way she could of left the series was by going back to her husband in Paris and at the same time inadvertently giving Louie a glimmer of hope. They’re star crashed lovers who are meant to be friends and nothing more, it just makes more sense that way.
- Peggy Olsen and Don Draper. As the first season of Mad Men opened, we saw Peggy Olsen become Don Draper’s new secretary. It was safe for the viewer to assume they were going to have some meaningless sex. Except that didn’t happen at all. Through the next 4 seasons of the show Don Draper’s slept with nearly every woman that’s come across his path, one of the few exceptions being Peggy Olsen. Instead of becoming a conquest, she became a peer. If they were to have sex, it would make Don Draper the worst person ever, and he’s already a giant scumbag – though still the man at the same time. It would be one soul crushing sex scene, that’s for sure, it would drive Don Draper to his sexual bottom.
- Pam and Brian the Sound Guy. In this last season of the Office the show finally acknowledged there’s a film crew around them at all times shooting a documentary. Apparently Pam became close with some sound guy named Brian. He saves her from being beaten and comforts her when she fights with her oh-so-perfect husband, Jim. The show’s already given the viewers what they wanted 6 years ago by having Jim and Pam get together. Could they do it again by destroying the relationship the show was initially based around? Doesn’t look like it, the writers and producers will never break them up no matter how many red herrings they throw our way.
