When Talking About the Streets Gets Boring: Rap Songs About TV Shows

Hip hop has been around for over 30 years and nearly every subject has been exhausted. So once you’ve written everything you can about your cars, your houses, and your jewelry, what’s left? All the TV you watch in between gigs and recording sessions.

1.  Game of Thrones Mixtape: Catch the Throne

This was actually commissioned by HBO. They wrangled up as many big name rappers as they could to reference Game of Thrones characters while bragging about objects. At points in the mixtape, it sounds like some of these guys never even read the books! Link to it in pitchfork.com.

2. Seinfeld: The Mixtape About Nothing

The rapper Wales released the Mixtape About Nothing in 2008. Made because he’s a huge Seinfeld fan and has seen every episode, he used samples from the show and even got Julia Louis-Dreyfus to appear on the mixtape. In an odd turn of events he also included the audio of Kramer dropping N bombs at the Laugh Factory on the track “The Kramer”.

3. Community – Alison Brie Rap

Community, the oft-almost-canceled NBC show has a hardcore audience that’s kept it alive all these years. Rappers like Johnny Wizdom making odd odes to Alison Brie have kept the show going. Johnny’s obsession with Brie would be creepy if she weren’t so attractive.

4. Family Matters – Did I Do That?

The Homeless Heroes tribute to the great Steve Urkel may have come 14 years after the show went off the air but thanks to reruns it’s still relevant. This is what will finally turn Laura around. Too bad they couldn’t get Jaleel White to at least lip sync through this.

5. Lost – “I’ll Never Be Lost Again”

The Injustice League couldn’t bare to see Lost go off the air so they put together a hip hop ballad to send it off. If only this had played as the show was ending, everyone would of been much happier.
