Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA

The U.S. Supreme Court announced that DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional in a 5-4 decision, finding the act to be an unconstitutional deprivation of equal liberty and “violates basic due process and equal protection principles applicable to the Federal Government.” DOMA had defined marriage as between a man and a woman in regards to federal benefits.
