Street Art Mysteriously Disappears
The Disney-fication of the Lower East Side of New York City continues as two long time murals were erased over the last several days. A mural honoring the late Joe Strummer along the side of the bar Niagra on East 7th was removed as part of a renovation project. Rocker Jessie Malin owns Niagra and has promised to restore the mural once work is finished. The famous East Houston Murals by the artist Chico were mysteriously removed last weekend. What’s stranger is that Chico was hired by the businesses in the area to do the artwork. No one’s saying why they were removed.
