Hit series Stranger Things is taking inspiration from a cult-classic comedy. Variety reported today that Chevy Chase’s 1985 comedy movie Fletch will be a source of inspiration for the Netflix series. Fletch?
David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper in the series told Variety, “‘Fletch’ is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from ‘Stranger Things’ and you wouldn’t expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season.’”
He also revealed that things are going to get dark, as Hopper continues to parent Eleven as she enters her teen years- complicated times for sure even in towns that aren’t dealing with paranormal abilities and twin worlds inhabited by monsters. But even moreso in towns that are.
So how does Fletch figure into this world where the primary performers are kids? Harbour didn’t give any clues but did say that Season 3 will be a departure from the prior two seasons, tonally.
But we aren’t expecting to see Dr. Rosenrosen or Frieda’s Boss making rounds in Hawkins. Maybe they’re just getting a Moe’s in town and everyone’s ordering the John Cocktosen.
