SNL’s Own “League Of Their Own”

This week, baseball enjoyed the opening of the 2015 MLB season. Saturday Night Live celebrated the return of America’s past time with a parody of the women’s baseball classic “A League of Their Own”. In its PBS Cinema Classics screening of the “Their Own League”, SNL looked at the many many barriers in baseball history.
The women of SNL portrayed the Rockville Peaches, the women who took over the baseball diamond while their husbands, brothers and the rest of the men in America went off to fight World War II. Women have finally broken the gender barrier and are playing pro ball. Not all barriers were obviously meant to be broken simultaneously. Saturday Night Live host Taraji P. Henson shows up at the game also wanting to play. This really throws off the Peaches (including Bobby Moynihan posing as a woman) who are thrilled that women can now play, it’s just that they’re not even ready for all women to be allowed to play ball. This messes up the whole integration plan. Because as Kate McKinnon puts it, “While are husbands are away…we’re the racists”.
