Sinkhole Forces Evacuation of Louisiana Town

sinkhole16A 22-acre sinkhole caused by a collapsed underground salt dome cavern is forcing the 350 residents of the Assumption Parish community, a spot along Bayou Corne, to evacuate. The sinkhole, discovered on August 3, 2012, has been oozing oil and natural gas and growing slowly, so residents were recently advised to leave their homes. The company behind the salt dome cavern, Texas Brine Co., is offering buyouts to individuals who have not already joined lawsuits filed against them. Some would call it horrible luck, others would say it’s an excellent mud-wrestling opportunity.
