It’s womens history month and what better way to celebrate than by spotlighting women who have been fighting stereotypes in comedy for decades!
Back in January, comedian and producer Carol Montgomery tipped us off to an amazing show going on across the country bringing these women to the stage.
Funny Women of a Certain Age is a show straight from the unfettered mouths and uninhibited minds of hilarious daring, women who have seen it all. They’ve raised children both on and off the road, having club bouncers watch their babies while onstage. These women have stayed in comedy condos where you don’t want to use a blacklight on anything. They’ve been told women aren’t funny and asked to trade sexual favors for work.
January’s edition of the show at Brooklyn’s famed Bell House was going to be a particularly special event because Showtime was filming the show for a special airing this month.
This groundbreaking TV special featured six female comics over the age of 50 who are knocking down the walls of ageism and sexism one joke at a time with Fran Drescher headlining. Drescher leads a cast of some of the best mature, female comics in the business. Featuring Carole Montgomery, Vanessa Hollingshead, Kerri Louise, Lynne Koplitz and Luenell. Each woman has years of experience making people laugh.
In this one hour television event, creator of the show, Carole Montgomery comes home to Brooklyn and back to Showtime where she made her first network television appearance on Comedy Club All Stars 6.
Earlier this year we featured all six women sharing with us the women who inspired them to become comedians, and you can check that out right here.
The show premieres on March 23rd at 9pm, exclusively on Showtime.
