Seinfeld “There’s a Creepy PC Thing Out There That Really Bothers Me”

Last night was Jerry Seinfeld’s first time on NBC’s Late Night Show. He sat down with Seth Meyers, and explained that with Letterman gone, Jay gone, and Carson dead, he’s auditioning shows to find a new “home.”  But he will not be auditioned, and we mean by that is, he refused to do a pre-interview with the Meyers team.  He blew the lid of the whole “spontaneous stories on late night thing”  to the 90% of America who never noticed that Late Night interview topics are set up ahead of time, and guess what, they still won’t notice.

But before they started talking Jerry wanted to make it clear, “I don’t need this, I don’t want this…I don’t want to be on these shows,” eliciting a groan from the audience. With that out of the way the conversation moved on to un-planned things, like Seinfeld reruns coming to hulu and that whole PC vipers nest.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the story about Seinfeld refusing to play colleges because they have become PC is all over the internet, despite that Seinfeld isn’t exactly known for pushing boundaries.  In a phone interview with Colin Cowherd last week on The Herd on ESPN Radio, Seinfeld had said he won’t perform at colleges because fellow comedians have told him “all the time… ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC.'”

He continued to addressed his feelings about political correctness last night with Seth.   “There’s a creepy PC thing out there that really bothers me,” he told Meyers.  “And” he said, “they keep moving the line in”, so jokes that he used to do that were acceptable and funny, are now seen as offensive.

“Are you kidding me?,” Jerry said.  “I could imagine a time where people say, ‘Well, that’s offensive to suggest that a gay person moves their hands in a flourishing motion and you now need to apologize.’ ”

New Yorker Editor David Remnick was also a guest and talked about how political correctness affects the magazine, particularly with covers and cartoons.

“To “explain and defend” is not apologize,” Jerry said, asking Remnick if he’s ever apologized for something the magazine put out. Remnick said that he hasn’t.

Jerry took an accusing tone with Seth suggesting maybe Seth is guilty of being too PC.  Seinfeld pointed out that Meyers had put out on instagram that he wasn’t going to joke about Caitlyn Jenner when the magazine cover came out.  Seth clarified, that he just wasn’t going to joke about Caitlyn that day because he thought it was a beautiful moment and didn’t want to take it down.

“Oooh that day,” Jerry said.  “Oh, okay. Good, I feel better now. ”

Thank goodness, Seth. Looks like you’re back in the running.
