Police Academy is Coming Back! Yay?

Steve Guttenberg, star of the 1980’s Police Academy franchise says he’s bringing it back! Sources have been whispering about a possible reboot or sequel in the works for years, but this is the first official word. In fact, Guttenberg revealed in a tweet on Monday, it may already be a done deal. “It’s in a gift bag being ready,” he wrote indicating that all we’re waiting on is a release. Guttenberg’s tweet came as a reply to a fan expressing hope that Steve was in London filming a new Police Academy movie.

We don’t know whether Guttenberg’s character, Carey Mahoney will be a part of the new project, or whether it will get a theatrical release, or even if it will be a movie or a streaming series of some sort.

Talks of a planned sequel go back to 2003 with plans to bring back most of the cast, and every few years there’s more talk of the project in development. The last serious media reports on the comeback took place in 2012. IMDB has listed an eighth installment of the franchise in development, but that hasn’t been updated in over a year.

For those surprised to learn there were seven Police Academy- yeah us too. The original came out in 1984 starring Guttenberg and was quickly followed by PA2: “Their First Assignment” which made Bobcat Goldthwait a major star. We remember both of those of course as well as a third and fourth installment called “Back in Training”, “Citizens on Patrol”. Then there was a Miami Beach fifth movie, but we’ve completely forgotten about 6 which had something to do with a jewel heist, and 7 apparently went down in Russia.
