Piff the Magic Dragon Raises Money for Homeless Shelter

While on America’s Got Talent, Las Vegas comedian Piff the Magic Dragon proved that he’s not only a great comedian, but an impressive magician as well. This past weekend in Portland, he proved that he’s also a really cool guy.
Local NBC affiliate KGW reported on Monday about a random act of generosity that took place at Portland’s Helium Comedy Club on Saturday night. Jon Thompson, a local who volunteers at the Portland Rescue Mission, was at Helium to see Piff the Magic Dragon, who was headlining that night. Piff, like many other magicians, relies on involving audience members in his routine, and that night, he picked Thompson out of the crowd.
While on stage, he asked Thompson what he did in Portland, and Thompson told him that he worked with the homeless at the Rescue Mission. Piff busted Thompson’s balls, joking “you know this isn’t a dating site, right?” The comic continued to rib Thompson for a bit before asking him to let the audience know what supplies the shelter was in need of, which Thompson did.
After the show, Piff posed for photos with the crowd, but announced that he was going to be charging for the photos. “That’ll be a five dollar donation to the Portland Rescue Mission and to Jon,” the comic told the line of waiting fans, who cheered their approval.
Piff had Thompson stand with him to collect the funds, which totaled $471 by the time the last photo was taken. Then, Piff offered to match every dollar in the bucket. You see, he had seen a local news report on TV about Portland’s homeless crisis and, seeing that a chance to help had fallen into his lap, felt that he had to jump at the opportunity.
For simply going to a comedy show, Thompson was able to raise $942 for the Portland Rescue Mission during a time when the city’s homeless population needed it most. If that doesn’t give you a case of the good feels, I don’t know what will!
