Mindy Kaling Staying Away From Brother Who Posed As Black Student

Mindy Kaling wants nothing to do with her brother. And it doesn’t matter which identity her brother is using, whether it’s Vijay the Indian-American med student or Jojo the African-American med student.

Vijay Chokal-Ingam recently blogged about how he altered his appearance slightly and changed his name to appear black on his med school applications. He claimed on his blog, “Almost Black” that as an Indian-American he couldn’t get accepted into medical school, but when he posed as black man, he became a hot commodity at schools like Harvard, Penn and Columbia despite having less than stellar grades.

Mindy Kaling didn’t have anything to say about her brother’s anti-affirmative action experiment. A rep for her sitcom did the talking for her. A spokesperson for “The Mindy Project” on FOX told the New York Daily News, “Mindy has been estranged from her brother for years.” And in a statement that no publicist has ever had to say before in the history of show business, the rep added, “She was not aware of his decision to apply to medical school under a different name and race.”
