Recently, Marc Maron announced that President Obama planned to visit his garage for a one-hour interview for Maron’s WTF podcast. If it seemed like just a joke, there’s plenty of confirmation that the interview actually happened. Like this photo posted by Maron on his instagram feed.

Maron spoke with The New York Times shortly after the interview concluded. He recapped how the interview came together, how he prepared, and how he felt the conversation went. Maron also revealed that until the last moment, he doubted the interview would even occur.

“We knew at some point that, if it didn’t happen, it was going to be because there’s a problem in the country or a problem in the world. Something horrible happened,” Maron said, referring to the Charleston shootings. “As that news broke on Wednesday night, we were like, It’s probably not going to happen. The next day, he made his statement and it became clear he was going to move on with his plans. He’s the president, and he manages a lot of stuff.”

Maron also spoke to the Wall Street Journal and offered some insight into why the President requested to appear on his podcast. Maron told the Journal, “At some point during the conversation he said that he wanted to get people to engage in politics. I think in his mind [he thought] that this would reach an intelligent group of people that may feel detached from the actual personal engagement in political action and interest in politics.”  A White House spokesman also told reporters that appearing on WTF would “really offer listeners the opportunity to have more insight into how [the President] makes decisions” and into “what he’s thinking about in terms of his family, his past, his future.”

Listen to a short preview of the interview, where Maron and Obama talk about the Charleston shootings, gun control, and Obama’s favorite comedians.
