Live From Cleveland, It’s Saturday Night Live’s RNC Weekend Update!

WU RNC

The Saturday Night Live news anchors didn’t get to take the entire summer off while the show is in hiatus following its 41st year on the air.

Colin Jost and Michael Che gave their take on the Republican National Convention’s happenings and speakers thus far this week, in a near empty Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland at midnight on NBC’s newsy sister channel MSNBC. They went live about an hour following Vice-Presidential nominee Mike Pence’s address to the convention and the country. Jost and Che powered through their live broadcast despite just a few people sticking around in the convention arena to laugh and enjoy watching a live Weekend Update.

One thing the WU anchors focused on were the celebrities speaking at the convention, or the real lack of their “celebrity” status. Michael Che was mostly interested in the money that he claims Scott Baio still owes him from the 90s. Other topics that Jost and Che commented on included Rudy Giuliani’s lack of direction, Chris Christie’s brand of justice and Melania Trump’s “straight up jacking of Michelle Obama’s speech”. Che also compared Ted Cruz’s speech with a lack of endorsement for nominee Donald Trump to a man giving a reception toast to his ex-wife and her new husband at their wedding.

In a pre-produced video segment, Michael Che introduced the hottest game app at the RNC, “Trumpy’Mon GO” where you search the convention looking to capture any possible minorities found at the GOP event. One helpful convention goer thought she saw some Hawaiians. Check out the video below to see if Che was able to catch ’em all.

Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped up their RNC edition of Weekend Update with a visit from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Kate McKinnon traveled to Cleveland to represent at the Q as her feisty and punchy Supreme Court character. McKinnon gave her patented Gins-Burns to Donald Trump, Mike Pence and Chris Christie. Also, see below. She even had a sexy slow Gins-burn for President Obama’s high court nominee Merrick Garland.

Michael Che and Colin Jost aren’t done with their convention coverage yet. They’ll be back next week on Wednesday for another live edition of SNL’s Weekend Update at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on MSNBC where Hillary Clinton will officially receive her party’s nomination.
