Listen to Lemon’s Million Matzoh Balls Over and Over and Over and Over

The new dark comedy film, Lemon, is creating plenty of buzz, with some critics hating the oddball comedy and others singing its praises calling it “brilliant” “surprising” “innovating” “unforgettable” and “poetic”. The film has an amazing cast, that includes Shiri Appleby, Fred Melamed, Rhea Perlman, David Paymer, Martin Starr and Brett Gelman and one of the best scenes in the movie has all of them in it. And there’s nothing dark about this scene- unless of course you happen to glance at Gelman’s character during the revelry or see the scene leading up to it…..
Melamed and Perlman lead their extended family through a rousing rendition of the song “A Million Matzoh Balls” and Vulture calls the scene “one of the greatest Jewish film moments” of all time. That’s a tough title to live up to, and we’ll set aside whether it’s true or not, but there’s no doubt it’s an unforgettable scene. Watch it once, you’ll want to see it again. Watch it twice and you’ll be humming the song all week. Watched in isolation, it’s unrestrained silliness and chaos at its best- an excellent counterpart to the subdued tones of much of the rest of the film. Vulture interviewed Lemon’s Shiri Appleby about the scene (and so did we, so check it out here) but they got something we didn’t– a clip of the song, so you can see it over and over.
Enjoy.
