The Lights Go Out in Detroit
The Mayor of Detroit is moving forward on removing 40% of the city’s street lights, going from 88,000 to 46,000 lights. Detroit has lost 60% of its population since 1950 and vacant property now accounts for 37 square miles.
“You have to identify those neighborhoods where you want to concentrate your population,” said Chris Brown, Detroit’s chief operating officer. “We’re not going to light distressed areas like we light other areas.”
The city is making this move to save cash and to reshape the population of the city, to condense its dwindling population. Or this plan will totally backfire and people will be stuck in what would amount to be Thunderdome.
