Kumail Nanjiani Tells Deadline How a Bad Pitch Led to the Big Sick

During a deadline talk, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon sat down with to talk about how they got their movie, The Big Sick made. Kumail says he met Judd Apatow at SXSW and pitched an idea for a movie about a Ghost Witch- you know, a witch that dies and comes back as a ghost. Apatow asked if they have any other ideas, and Nanjiani shared his real-life story. That hit. Gordon said they worked on the script for three years before they shared it with their producers.

They also talked about their approach to the film, how their actual first meeting differed slightly from their characters first meeting in the film, and how they got their families perspective for the film.

They’ve both agreed they work well together and would like to do another project. Ghost Witch anyone?
