Kenya Barris who has already locked in a place in the situation comedy hall of fame as the creator of ABC’s smash hit Black-ish, has announced his first comedy series project since making the jump to Netflix last year.
The platform has ordered “Black Excellence”, his first series project since leaving ABC. Rashida Jones will star in the series which Barris promises will reboot the concept of the family sitcom. The series is inspired by Barris’ irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture, and promises Black Excellence will be a reimagining of the family sitcom.
The series officially launched its writers room last month, and he is wasting little time getting to work on exploring and pushing those boundaries.
Barris and Jones will executive produce alongside Hale Rothstein (black-ish, grown-ish). The single-camera comedy will be produced through Barris’ production company, Khalabo Ink Society, under the multi-hyphenate’s overall series deal with the streamer.
