Joan Fontaine (1917-2013)

joan fontaineJoan Fontaine, Hitchcock’s first Hollywood Heroine, died at 96 years old Sunday. She is best known for her films with Alfred Hitchcock; as the unnamed second wife in Rebecca and as the wife of Cary Grant in Suspicion. For her role as Lina in Suspicion, Fontaine won a best actress Oscar at the age of 24 (her second consecutive nomination for the coveted honor), and beat her own sister, Olivia De Havilland. She would remain the only actor or actress to win the statue for their work with Hitchcock.

She was nominated once more, in 1943 as a lead actress in The Constant Nymph. Other films of note include The Women, Jane Eyre, and This Above All. Her film career slowed in the 1950s, so like many women of the golden age, moved over to work in television and Broadway.

As of her famous rivalry with her sister she said:
I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she’ll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it!

She is survived by her sister Olivia DeHavilland, age 97.
