On Thursday SiriusXM launched a new comedy channel called Comedy Greats that will play the legends of comedy around the clock. For their big launch event, Comedian Jim Norton, who also co-hosts the Opie Show with Jim Norton hosted a special count down of the top 50 comedy greats of all time. Comedians Sherrod Small and Dan Soder joined Norton in front of a studio audience for the countdown, which didn’t include a countdown or a list read, because as Jim said, he hates lists. It was more of a discussion about stand up comedy. The two hour show includes clips from comedians, but not from the top 50 comedians. Instead Norton, Small, Soder and members of the audience chose clips from comedians who didn’t make the list, like John Mulaney, Brian Regan, Lisa Lampanelli, Pat Cooper and Ralphie May.
According to the SiriusXM website, listeners voted the usual suspects, George Carlin and Richard Pryor in the top two spots with Carlin edging out Pryor for the top spot. Robin Williams came in at third, and Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock round out the top five. And Rodney Dangerfield, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis CK, and Don Rickles completed the top 10.
You have to go al the way down to #13 before a female comic makes the list with Joan Rivers followed by Ellen DeGeneres at #14, and then Roseanne grabbed the #20 spot. Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer were the only other ladies to make the list coming in at #34 and #43.
Some other names making the list included Woody Allen (12),Dave Chappelle (15), Andrew Dice Clay (16), Bill Hicks (19) Bill Burr (21) Mitch Hedberg (22), Dave Attell (27), Gilbert Gottfried (46), Patrice O’Neal (47), and Colin Quinn (48).
Noticeably absent from the list– Bill Cosby who prior to this year’s allegations of sexual assault was considered one of the giants of stand up comedy. The list also left out some other giant names, like Brian Regan, Bernie Mac, Jonathan Winters, Albert Brooks, Richard Lewis, Andy Kaufman, Billy Connolly and Tracy Morgan.
In case you’re wondering, did Norton himself make it onto the list? Yes he did. He got in at #50. You can read the full list, as posted on SiriusXM’s website below.
