Jim Jefferies will be awarded Comedian of the Year! Other award winners include Kevin Hart, Hasan Minhaj, Amanda Seales, Nick Kroll & Co.
Just for Laughs is coming in just a few weeks and today comes one of the year’s biggest announcements and honors- the reveal of the JFL award winners. Comedy fans don’t generally care about awards, but the JFL Annual Red Carpet and Awards Ceremony is a pretty big honor for performers.
The biggest award- Stand-Up Comedian of Year for 2019 will go to a comedian we’ve been honoring since our own awards began- Jim Jefferies. Jefferies is a stand up powerhouse and one of the most powerful touring acts this year. He’s constantly producing new material and his late night Comedy Central talk show has been consistently excellent. He’s also the creator and star of FX’s Legit, and the creator and performer of an impressive list of comedy specials. It’s a perfect choice, Congratulations JJ! Jimmy Carr will present the award to Jim.
The Generation Award this year will go to Kevin Hart- who seems to be one of the biggest stars in the world. We’ll confess, we don’t really know what the generation award is all about. It seems to just be a catch all- to honor someone who has proven they’re not only killing it right now, but they’ve proven they’re sticking around. The Generation Award isn’t given out every year- no Generation award was given out in 2018, or 2016 (maybe its an odd year thing?) but Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle are prior winners of the honor.
Hasan Minhaj seems to be the perfect choice of breakout star of the year. His Netflix talk show has proven to be bold and well received. And it was only 5 years ago that he was one of Just for Laugh’s then-unknown new faces! Trevor Noah will present his award. Last year’s winner was Lil Rel.
JFL likes newcomers, so in addition to a breakout award, they also select an honoree to win the rising star comedian of the year. This year, that rising talent is Amanda Seales. The former VJ is a regular on HBO’s Insecure, she’s written, produced and starred in two seasons of her scripted comedy, Get Your Life, that went viral after articulately and passionately confronting Caitlyn Jenner on issues of race and equality in America. And this summer she is the sole shining star in the mess of comedy competition series, Bring the Funny on NBC. SNL’s Chris Redd will present her award.
Congratulations to the team at Netflix’s Big Mouth who will receive the honors of Comedy Writers of the Year. The animated look at the frightening world of puberty is written by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin & Jennifer Flackett. Heading into its third season, Big Mouth features the voices of comedy superstars including Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, and Fred Armisen, written by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. This award will be presented to the writers of Netflix’s Big Mouth by actor Jason Mantzoukas.
