Jeff Ross Explains to Conan Why He Went to Jail

Jeff Ross’s new comedy special takes place in prison. Last night on Conan, the roastmaster general explained his motivations for roasting inmates. According to Ross, his reasoning went way beyond being funny, or having an angle, there was a real social purpose behind his choice.

Ross said he went to the Brazos County Prison because he’s fascinated by the American criminal. He wanted to know “who are they really, why are they so many of them?” Ross said he “wanted to put a human face on the inmate in America,” and added, “and I met a lot of scumbags too.”

Who knew Jeffrey Ross, the human comic most known for his insults, was concerned about rights? Ross pointed out that 90% of the people in jail right now are coming out one day, and wanted to help give some of them some hope. “If you can laugh at yourself” he said, “you are one step closer to freedom.”

So Jeff might just be the free-est man in America.
