If You’ve Been Deployed Overseas, You’re Going to be Unemployed
That’s what a new research paper has concluded, that veterans returning from overseas are much more likely to not find any work when they come home. And the numbers are much higher regarding recent veterans as opposed to older ones. Here’s some of their findings:
Being a new veteran when the percentage of service members deployed overseas rises by 1 percentage point predicts a 7 percentage point increase in the probability of being unemployed. Thus, once we control for all factors, extended wartime deployments, not the effects of the Great Recession, appear to account for the relatively high unemployment rates among recent veterans.
The few, the proud, the woefully underemployed could become the armed forces new slogan.
