Has Reddit Gone Mad With Power!?
The folks over at Gawker seem to think so. Last week we posted that Reddit got their readers to leave GoDaddy.com in droves because, they reported, GoDaddy was supporting SOPA– the highly restrictive and controversial proposed anti-piracy act.
Since their GoDaddy victory, Reddit users are ready to take on the world. Gawker reporter Adrien Chen says they’ve gone power mad, talking like “digital Boss Tweeds.” Now they’re going after politicians. “Let’s pick ONE Senator of (sic) voted for NDAA/SOPA and destroy him like we’re doing for GoDaddy,” read a popular post.
So the Reddit-ites picked a senator, and went after Republican Wisconsin Rep Paul Ryan. So now we have operation PullRyan.com. But ooooops. Turns out that Paul Ryan isn’t even against SOPA. So now what, now that the pullryan.com contingent has already raised $15,000 for Paul Ryan’s opponent based on misinformation?
And apparently this isn’t the first time the Reddit Hive has gone wild. According to the Gawker article, “this is the same collective will once harnessed to hound a legitimate cancer fundraiser off the internet because she was thought to be a scammer, and where a post inviting users to voice their racist opinions actually crashed the site.”
Read all about it over at gawker.com and let us know what you think of the Reddit-Hive. Have you taken part in any of the Reddit campaigns?
