H. Jon Benjamin Apologizes for “Me So Horny” Joke

Ooooh boy, H. Jon Benjamin was the latest comedian to learn that Twitter is just too dangerous for making throwaway jokes.

The comedian and voice actor famous for starring in Bobs Burgers and Archer took some heat for a dumb joke he tweeted this past weekend. You remember that “Me so horny” line that spawned an annoying song, and countless poor impressions from the movie Full Metal Jacket? If you do, you’re more cinematically literate than a large number of Tweeters who did not get the joke Benjamin made after making a cup of oolong tea this weekend.

He tweeted ““Quick idea for the name of a tea shop- ‘ooh me so horny, me love you oolong time tea shop,’” and quickly became the target of irate social media users who found the joke racist. Maybe they didn’t know the pop cultural reference or maybe they did and felt it was no longer an acceptable reference in 2018. But people were pissed.

The original tweet is gone, and in its place an apology admitting the joke was lazy and essentially a throwaway. “The fact that it was a famous line in a movie does not give me license to make light of the big picture stereotyping of Vietnamese people and Asian Americans in general. I’m sorry I ever made that cup of tea. And thanks for making me realize this in quick order.”

The apology seemed to quiet things down well enough and HJB is back to making Twitter cracks, and you have to do a lot of scrolling to find anyone complaining.

But back over the weekend, there were hard feelings. But there were an equal number of people complaining about oversensitivity.  For every complaint like this one:

“The me love you long time shit stemmed from the old brothel in Vietnam war era , for fucks sake White People please let it go , you wanna be racist at least say shit that’s reflecting current atmosphere, shits getting old .T

there were complaints about the complaints.  Like this one:

“People are too sensitive and have no sense of humor, and have obviously never seen Full Metal Jacket. ”

And then there were the tweets who were neither offended nor upset with the complaints. And they’re mostly confused about Arbys.

“I’m so confused. Bob Belcher () aka is the voice in the new commercial. THEY DON’T HAVE BURGERS. can you please remedy this & buy out his contract to use him in your next ad or whatevs? That’ll make things right again.”

We’re just happy new Bob’s Burgers episodes return September 30th. Just don’t expect the “Love me Oolong Time” burger with a side of tea to make the specials list.
