George Carlin Portrait To Be Installed At The National Portrait Gallery

Last month, Smithsonian.com asked which of three comedians should have a place of honor its “Recognize” wall at the National Portrait Gallery in the nation’s capital. “Recognize” is an exhibit at the gallery that is dedicated to Americans who have had “a significant effect on American politics, history, and culture.” The choices were Groucho Marx, Ellen DeGeneres and George Carlin.
At the end of February and after thousands of votes, George Carlin was selected. This week, his portrait will officially go on display at the museum. The photo that will hang in the gallery was taken by Arthur Grace in 1990, the same year George Carlin did his 7th comedy special for HBO called “Doin’ It Again”. This is another national honor that’s being given to the late comedian. In 2008, George was posthumously awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the Kennedy City Honors.
George Carlin’s portrait will be officially installed on the “Recognize” wall at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC this Friday, March 27th.
