Does Your Accent Say It All!?
We’ve Got Questions. You’ve Got Answers
When we hear someone speaking with an accent, we all form certain prejudices about the intelligence of the person speaking in that accent. Now not every person from the Jersey shore has the brainpower of an empty peanut shell, and not every person with a redneck twang to their voice is uneducated. But we do harbor those prejudices. And the reverse is true as well. Certain accents will lead you to assume the person you are speaking to is highly intelligent.
What are your prejudices? What assumptions to you make when you hear someone with a Long Island accent? Jersey? Deep south? Inner City Black? Irish? American-Italian? Valley Girl? Chicago? Texas? Do certain foreign accents lead you to make assumptions about intellect? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.
