Dave Chappelle Honors Ohio Victims With Celebrity Benefit

Victims of the early August 2019 Dayton Ohio shooting were honored on Sunday night after Dave Chappelle hosted a star studded fundraising show. Jon Stewart, Michael Che and Chris Rock took the stage, and so did Lady Gaga, Chance the Rapper, Talib Kweli, Teyana Taylor, Thundercat and Stevie Wonder.
Nine were killed and 27 injured during the 8 second event earlier this month. 20,000 showed up to mourn them, honor them, and draw support from each other, all while raising money for survivors and families of the victims. The Gem City Shine event took place near to where the savage attack took place, an attempt to help people feel comfortable returning once again to the district.
Chappelle grew up in Ohio and still lives there- about 20 miles from Dayton- and has always been active in local affairs. “Don’t forget what this place is about,” Chappelle said on stage. “Mankind learned how to fly in this city.”
Tickets were free for the event.
Chappelle also appeared at Kanye’s Sunday Service which was held in Dayton yesterday.
The day was declared Dave Chappelle day by the city Mayor Nan Whaley who said Chappelle arranged for all of the performances and even picked up the bill for a good part of the event.
Dave Chappelle just came out to the stage. He says nothing will break our spirit and don’t forget what this city is all about. He’s also leading an OH-IO chant @WDTN #GemCityShine pic.twitter.com/sE6WVNBCLq
