Dave Chappelle Gets on Stage with John Mayer, Covers Nirvana

You gotta wonder why Dave Chappelle hasn’t signed up for Comedy Central’s Comedy Jam this year, because he seems to love getting up on stage to rock with a band. Wednesday night Chappelle was spotted on stage with John Mayer at Hotel Cafe singing Nirvana’s “Come as You Are.” According to the Instagrammer who posted video footage of the performance, (nightengale68) the show was only a $10 ticket. There’s also footage posted by Instagrammer KenZDoyle of Mayer and Chappelle performing the end of  “Free Falling” after which Chappelle said “I’ve got one more request from the 80’s, you’re gonna hate me for this.” Mayer answered that he and Dave do this in cities till around 5am. “What happens is….”, Chappelle replies, “If you put your phones down, I’ll tell you the truth.”

The show was a double surprise for fans- it was a secret show for John Mayer, with the double surprise being Chappelle performing. Getting footage of a Chappelle performance is notoriously difficult- at his comedy shows, he requires his audience to lock up their cell phones.

Footage of Chappelle singing Creep hit social media twice in 2016- once from a birthday party for Erykah Badu last February, and then again from an SNL afterparty after he hosted the show in November.
