Danny McBride Televangelist Series is a Go at HBO

Big news (not really), HBO is picking up Danny McBride’s televangelist series. It’s not news because we already knew that the pilot was in development and there was never a doubt in anyone’s mind that the show would get picked up. McBride’s last two projects with HBO were both hilarious, and riveting. McBride’s characters Kenny Powers and Neal Gamby are some of the funniest and best written comedic characters on television, and both shows- Eastbound & Down, and Vice Principals- are in our top ten shows of the decade.

As we previously reported, “The Righteous Gemstones” follows a world-famous televangelist family and their long tradition of charitable greed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. John Goodman plays a powerful force in the evangelist world known for aggressive salvation techniques and a weekly television ministry. He’s the patriarch of the family. McBride plays his son, a young maverick looking to update the family biz. There’s tension there, setting in motion the series action.

Now we know that Edi Patterson is on board as Judy, sibling to McBride’s character Jesse. You remember her as the perfect crazy female counterpart to McBride’s Gamby on Vice Principals. Also joining the series as other sibs are Workaholic’s star Adam Devine and Cassidy Freeman. Tony Cavalero and Keefe Chambers will play ex-Satanists who were saved.

The Wrecking Crew is on board too– Jody Hill and David Gordon Green will also executive produce alongside McBride.
