Comedy Streaming Service Officially Calls it Quits

One year and eight months after going live, comedy streaming service Seeso has announced that they are shutting down some time in 2017.

It’s only been four months since Seeso announced news that seemed like the streaming newcomer might be expanding– they were offering free access to Amazon Prime members. But then in May the announcement that head honcho Evan Shapiro was departing the service led most to speculate that the end was near. With plenty of great programming already on the slate and other highly anticipated shows yet to be released, many in the industry hoped that Seeso would regroup and stay afloat. Paul Reiser’s Tonight Show based series, for example was set to debut later this summer, and we recently praised Seeso’s inventive comedy programming and approach to stand up specials.

But today, the streamer released a statement to its users that the service will be shutting its comedy doors. The good news is that the announcement says many Seeso Originals have already found new homes. Website will host shows like HarmonQuest, My Brother, My Brother and Me, Hidden America with Jonah Ray, and The Cyanide and Happiness Show. Harmonquest Season 2 will premiere on VRV on September 15th. And starting today, Harmonquest season 1 will be available on VRV Select for free (with ads) in addition to with the combo pack subscription (without ads). No news has been released about fan favorite series What’s Your Fucking Deal!? or Bajillion Dollar Properties, and the fate of the various outstanding comedy specials are also unknown.

Dear Seeso-ers,

We’re writing to let you know that later this year, Seeso will be shutting its comedy doors.

Though we will be departing, much of our comedy will live on – and some of your favorite Seeso Originals have already found a new home.

You can now find HarmonQuest, My Brother, My Brother and Me, Hidden America with Jonah Ray and The Cyanide and Happiness Show on VRV:
We’ll let you know as soon as we have further information, including where to find the exciting project “There’s…Johnny!” and other Seeso Originals in the future (in the meantime, please note that There’s…Johnny! will no longer premiere this month as previously announced. We love this show and can’t wait for everyone to see it).
