Comedy Radio Hosts Ron and Gail Bennington Get Love for Music Series

Ron Bennington and Gail Bennington spend their days doing  comedy but once a month, they take a side trip over to SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks channel to talk seriously about music.  Their music show, GPS, tackles a new city and a new music scene every month– so far giving an education in the rock music of Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Memphis, London and New York City.  If you love music, if you even like music, you should be checking it out.  This week Vinyl District, a website devoted to music and vinyl interviewed Ron and Gail Bennington about GPS, and it’s a great read.

Shaun McGann asked Ron and Gail about why they decided to take on a music show, the various scenes, and how they choose their artists.”What really got us started on this idea of GPS is not just the music but the scene that was around the music,” Ron told Vinyl.  “Detroit actually got me interested once I’d seen the documentary about the Grande Ballroom, but also just thinking that the venue itself sets up what the music is going to be like—so it’s almost like the venue, the time, and the people around you set up what kind of music you’re going to be playing. If you played at CBGB’s in the 1970s, your sound was going to be different than if you happened to grow up playing in Laurel Canyon at the same time.

And of course, they also talked about vinyl. Gail has a huge collection and explained to Vinyl, why vinyl, is important to her. “I collect records in that I buy them, but they’ve always been much more functional for me. I’ve never been trying to hunt down a first press or anything like that,” she said. “If they play and if it’s a band I love or a band someone turned me on to, then I’ll pick it up. But I definitely was not the type of collector who was very particular about it—they’re very functional to me, I play them. It’s less of a collection and more of just the way I prefer to listen to music.”
