Canada’s JUNO Awards Bringing Back ‘Comedy Album of the Year’ Category

The JUNO Awards, one of the longest-running award ceremonies in Canada for recording artists, have made a big announcement today: For the first time in 33 years, the folks behind the ceremony will be reviving the Comedy Album of the Year category. The last recipients of the award were Rick Moranis (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Little Shop of Horrors) and Dave Thomas (Strange Brew, Coneheads), who together played the characters Bob and Doug McKenzie, the subjects of a popular sketch on Second City TV and the film Strange Brew for the album of the same name.
The category will include stand-up, improv, sketch and musical comedy, and will not be decided by sales figures, as categories like Album of the Year and Artist of the Year are. Nominees and winners for the award will be chosen by a panel of judges who are experts in that particular field, though it remains to be seen who those judges will be as of yet.
“We are thrilled to bring back Comedy Album of the Year, a category that celebrates Canada’s gifted comedians,” said President & CEO of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/The JUNO Awards, Allan Reid. “As we do with our diverse musical categories, the award embraces the full scope of this entertainment genre, recognizing the diverse talent making waves both locally and abroad.”
The JUNO Awards will be held on Saturday, March 24th, 2018.
