Comedian Bonnie McFarlane has been getting RAVES for her new book, You’re Better Than Me. Earlier this week fans packed into New York City’s Village Underground comedy club to hear her speak with SiriusXM radio host Ron Bennington about the book. The hour conversation was taped for an episode of Bennington’s Unmasked series, which documents the careers of the very best comedy writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, satirists, political comedians, comedic musicians and of course, stand up comedians in the business.
Hundreds of her fans stood in a line that wrapped around the block, past Ben’s Famous Pizzeria, to get into the club.
The room totally sold out to hear Bonnie talk candidly about writing the book, her growing up poor in rural Canada, getting her start in comedy, and failing miserably at trying to be friends with Sarah Silverman. McFarlane said that chef and publisher Anthony Bordain approached her about writing a book after she roasted him in 2012. “I’ve never met a woman who had a voice like yours,” he told her. “Which I guess was mean and a lot of swearing,” she said.
There were giant laughs throughout the hour and also some vulnerable moments when Bonnie spoke about dealing with an unexpected pregnancy that resulted from a sexual assault when she was only eighteen. The audience also learned that she’s the first comedian who ever baked cinnamon buns to bring to her first New York gig. Later, Bonnie’s husband, comedian Rich Vos also joined Bonnie briefly on stage. “I’m so fucking proud,” he said. “My wife is fucking brilliant.”
After the hour ended, every member of the audience received a copy of McFarlane’s book, and Bonnie spent another hour signing them for everyone. Bonnie later thanked Bennington for the experience calling it the greatest night of her life.
