Aasif Mandvi Defends Trevor Noah

Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi is sticking up for his co-worker and future boss Trevor Noah. The man picked to replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show on Comedy Central has been criticized for his past tweets that are being called anti-Semitic and misogynistic. According to the New York Daily News, Mandvi said, “The guy made some off color, irresponsible tweets, but he was trying to be funny.”

Mandvi also wondered where this Twitter witch hunt would lead to. He said, “There’s going to be a presidential candidate 25 years from now. Are we going to go back and look at his Twitter feed when he was 14 because it’s going to have a lot of stupid things with it. I don’t have the answer.”

He also gave Trevor Noah a huge vote of confidence in taking over the Daily Show. “I think he’s going to be great. They wanted a fresh new face. I don’t think they wanted to go with someone who was part of the Daily Show family already,” he said. “I’ve only met him a couple of times. He seems like a great guy. But, I trust Jon Stewart. Jon seems to want him to take over and I trust that.”

Comedy Central Issues Statement in Support of Trevor Noah

Comedy Central is also sticking up for their new host in a statement released yesterday.

“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included,” the network said in its statement. It continued: “To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
