This Week, SNL’s Jost and Che Are Live From Philadelphia!

Saturday Night Live’s news anchors, Colin Jost and Michael Che, continued their traveling political roadshow by doing a live edition of Weekend Update from Philadelphia in the Wells Fargo Center, site of the Democratic National Convention. Jost and Che did a live Weekend Update featuring events from the Republican National Convention last week in Cleveland. The WU duo had plenty to work with following Wednesday’s speakers which included President Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden and Vice-Presidential nominee Tim Kaine who was labeled by Colin Jost as being whiter than Colin Jost.

Most of Wednesday Night Live’s Weekend Update, which you can see in the video below, included Jost and Che going back and forth about what they each found to be the stranger things happening at the convention. They did their broadcast from the anchor desk above the emptying arena starting about 15 minutes later than its scheduled midnight start time.

A lot of comparisons are made during a political season, including Jost and Che mocking Hillary Clinton’s live via satellite appearance on Tuesday night when the sound of glass shattering led to the candidate appearing larger than life on a giant TV monitor at the convention. Jost compared it to the appearance of a James Bond villain in the movies while Che referred to her as Kim Jong Clinton.

Michael Che could not wrap his head around the unwavering support of the Bernie Sanders campaigners at the convention and called out the several white women in the audience crying while Sanders spoke at Monday’s convention. Che explained there’s nothing to cry about even if Bernie Sanders doesn’t get to become President. His thought out argument included tacos.

Themes for Colin Jost and Michael Che’s convention-cast also included Bill Clinton’s impassioned speech Tuesday night talking about how he first met Hillary Clinton. They didn’t question the former President’s romantic story, but they did challenge one of Bill’s bolder claims during his speech; that he and daughter Chelsea, when she was younger, had sat down to watch all 6 “Police Academy” movies back-to-back, a feat Jost claimed not even Steve Guttenberg had pulled off.

While discussing Michelle Obama’s speech on Monday, Michael Che focused more on Bill O’Reilly’s post speech comments that the slaves that built the White House were “well fed” and had “decent lodgings”. Che also challenged O’Reilly’s word choice when the FOX News host talked about how the U.S. government eventually quit “hiring” slave labor.

Meanwhile, Colin Jost explained why Tim “the Rosetta Stone” Kaine’s bilingual skills won’t be necessary and why we really don’t need a Spanish speaking Vice-President.

Last week, convention coverage of the Republicans included a pre-produced video piece of Michael Che playing Trumpy’Mon GO with the GOP faithful. Jost and Che ventured away from the news desk this week as well. They braved the hot, sticky weather outside the arena in Philadelphia, to see if convention goers and other visitors would accept a bottle of water. Who wouldn’t want free water on a humid Philly afternoon!? Well, just wait until you see the brand of water they’re offering.

The Saturday Night Live news team then wrapped up their Democratic National Convention coverage with a line that had the Hillary supporters watching the live broadcast inside the arena send Colin Jost off with some booing. Colin Jost and Michael Che will be back in the fall (unless you know something we don’t know yet) as Saturday Night Live returns to NBC for season number 42.
