10 Years Later, Head Of The FCC Admits He Didn’t Care About Janet’s Nipple
It’s been ten years since someone caught a glimpse of Janet Jackson’s breast during Super Bowl XXXVIII’s halftime show. The outrage and record fines changed the broadcasting industry forever. But in an interview with ESPN, former FCC Chairman Michael Powell admits he really didn’t give a shit:
But 10 years later, Powell is finally ready to admit that he never wanted to police boobs on TV.
“I think we’ve been removed from this long enough for me to tell you that I had to put my best version of outrage on that I could put on,” he says, shrugging his shoulders and rolling his eyes. “Part of it was surreal, right? Look, I think it was dumb to happen, and they knew the rules and were flirting with them, and my job is to enforce the rules, but, you know, really? This is what we’re gonna do?”
The Parents Television Council launched a half-million complaint campaign following the FCC’s decision not to act on Bono’s fleeting “fuck.” A bipartisan Congress voting to raise indecency fines, and talk of the incident going “viral,” forced Powell to drop the hammer. In his first interview since leaving the FCC, Powell points out that for 9/16 of a second of nip slip, he had to testify in front of Congress for nine hours.
