Seth Meyers Late Night Gig Extended to 2021

Seth Meyers is keeping his gig as host of Late Night for a giant 5 more years through 2021, NBC announced today. It’s a bold move, but NBC is in a bold mood, recently offering long term contracts to both Jimmy Fallon and Ellen, who are each dominating in their fields.

Meyers, a former head writer on “Saturday Night Live”, began hosting “Late Night” in February 2014 and has played a big part in keeping NBC dominant in late night television. Even though his show starts an hour later, it often outperforms NBC’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”. “Late Night” is also outperforming CBS’s “Late Late Show’, as well as ABC’s “Nightline”. His ratings have obviously caught notice of NBC executives, and has earned him a healthy extension of his late night contract.

Prior to Seth Meyers taking over the Late Night spot there have been three hosts of Late Night– Jimmy Fallon hosted the show for five years, Conan helmed the show for sixteen years prior to that which makes him the record holder, and David Letterman who created the show hosted for eleven years.

“I can’t thank NBC enough for continuing to support our show and this more than makes up for my disappointment in not getting cast in ‘The Wiz’” said Meyers.

“As a writer, performer and host, Seth has a rich history at NBC and we are thrilled that he’ll be at the helm of ‘Late Night’ for many more years,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “His knowledge of both current events and pop culture is unparalleled and he brings that expertise to ‘Late Night’ every night. The show couldn’t be in better hands.”

In December, NBC said Meyers will host a 2016 New Year’s Eve “Late Night” 10 p.m. primetime special that will highlight all the news and current events of the year.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers,” is executive produced by Lorne Michaels, and airs weeknights at 12:35 a.m. ET on NBC.
