IFC moves forward with projects from Hank Azaria and Dana Gould

IFC announced it has greenlit two new scripted comedy series – Brockmire, from Funny Or Die, starring and executive produced by Hank Azaria and Stan Against Evil from creator and writer Dana Gould and 3Arts Entertainment.

Brockmire is based on famed major league baseball announcer Jim Brockmire (Azaria) who suffers an embarrassing and very public meltdown live on the air after discovering his beloved wife’s serial infidelity. The character first appeared on Funny or Die as part of their GameChangers series in 2010. The “Brockmire” series will focus on the return of the famed color commentator a decade later as he tries to reclaim his career and love life in a small town, calling minor league baseball for the Morristown Frackers.

Azaria went to court to defend the originality of his character when friend Craig Beirko claimed Azaria’s ol’ timey baseball announcer character was too similar to Beirko’s ol’ timey baseball announcer character. The judge ruled that Azaria’s character was much more well defined, with distinct characteristics, defined in the court documents as “a middle-aged white man, wears plaid, a rose at his lapel, owns a lucky pen, has ‘old school’ values, has a penchant for movies especially ‘The Godfather,’ loves his wife to death, jovially interacts with his public, has a depth of obscure cultural knowledge, loses his temper uncontrollably, and, works as a baseball announcer.”

Brockmire is set to debut on IFC in early 2017

The second new IFC comedy project will be hitting the air in late 2016. Written and created by Dana Gould. Stan Against Evil follows Stan, a perpetually disgruntled former sheriff of a small New England town who was forced into retirement. Stan has trouble relinquishing his authority to Evie, the tough and beautiful new sheriff in town, but they form an unlikely alliance when both begin to realize things are not quite right. Together, they valiantly fight a plague of unleashed demons that have been haunting the town, which just happens to be built on the site of a massive 17th century witch burning

“Demons and disgrace are at the forefront of IFC’s new comedy strategy,” said Caserta in making the announcement. “And there’s no one we’d rather be in bed with – or save small towns with – than Hank and Dana. One of the hallmarks of IFC’s success is the exceptional caliber of creative genius that we get to partner with, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be making these shows.”
