Six Nations Rugby: A Great Way To Watch Football’s Roots

timthumbGridiron football can trace it’s ancestry to rugby football, born in England and played across the world. Every spring, the Six Nations Championship pits the best rugby union nations of Europe against each other: England, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, and Ireland (which represents the entire island). Wales is the defending champion, after winning the Triple Crown (a sweep by a British Isles team against the other three) and a Grand Slam (sweeping all five of their matches) in 2012. Scotland holds the Wooden Spoon, given to the team that finishes dead last. The Triple Crown and the Wooden Spoon are just a couple of individual trophies up for grabs, including this weekend’s Scotland vs England match for the Calcutta Cup. BBC America will simulcast the BBC One broadcast this Saturday, and will carry one match from all five weeks.
