Samantha Bee Didn’t Like TBS’ Twitter Joke, So She Told Them To Delete It… and They Did.

Samantha Bee of TBS’ “Full Frontal” defended presidential candidate Hillary Clinton yesterday by nudging her network to delete a tweet mocking the senator’s laugh. The tweet compared Clinton’s laugh to a hyena’s, which is a refreshing taunt since it has nothing to do with her appearance. In her response tweet, Bee said TBS should delete its account. Both TBS’ original tweet and Bee’s response have been deleted.
TBS humbly apologized for the tweet and promised to “leave political satire to professionals like Samantha Bee”. Following this line of logic, “Full Frontal” also says much crueler things about Donald Trump’s physicality and whether he deserves the criticism is purely subjective. Neutering comedy, political comedy especially, is an unrealistic slope that renders the genre obsolete.
Despite the tameness of the tweet, this move could belong to the larger Never Trump movement on behalf of liberals. It could be that as America nears its election and events become increasingly surreal, some comedians are now taking their jobs and political biases much more seriously. Whether or not that will genuinely help comedians preferred candidates is arguable, as it can be powerful to see the serious, vulnerable side of a comedic figure but their fans also weren’t interpreting their message seriously anyway.
